What does your job actually entail?
I work for HDR UK, specifically with the Big Data for Complex Disease Driver Programme, which brings together whole population, national linked health data to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other complex diseases, and focusing on the impact inequalities on these. I’m interested in inequalities, inequities, and intersectionality in health. My areas of specific research interest are sex and gender, greenspace and outdoor spaces for health and wellbeing, equitable access to healthy food, and public policy. I’m currently working with the MESSAGE (Medical Science Sex and Gender Equity) group on a project working to co-design a sex and gender policy framework for UK research funders.
Why did you join the DSxHE community?
I joined because Co-Founder Maxine Mackintosh did an incredible presentation, which I attended, and I was so excited to hear there were opportunities to get involved. I not only wanted to learn as much as I could but find out how I could meaningfully contribute to this field to ultimately reduce inequities in health. I’m part of the DSxHE Social Justice theme and symposium organisers group.

When not at work, you can be found...
At the top of a mountain with a group of young people, in the Scottish Highlands. In my other life, I work as an outdoor instructor, mountain leader, and youth worker. I believe that the outdoors has so many benefits to offer young people, but access to outdoor spaces and activities is greatly unequal. My outdoor work with a local charity is way to contribute to making these opportunities more accessible for young people in my area.
What’s a topic in data science/health equity that you know/care a lot about - why is it important/interesting, tell us about it!
I’m really interested in green and blue spaces, outdoor environments and activities, and connection to nature for health and wellbeing. I think that we have a long way to go in making the outdoors a space that is accessible and welcoming to all, regardless of background or situation, and I’m excited to see this improve in the coming years.
What’s a recent article/book/video/blog/event you’ve come across on data science and/or health equity that you found interesting and why?
The Health Gap by Michael Marmot: deeply empathetic, non judgmental, extremely well researched and evidenced, and a call to action.
What is your go-to lazy dinner?
Baked beans on toast

I’ve recently got into Fairisle Knitting, which is a great way to unwind and also learn more about heritage and culture in the Scottish Highlands
